Emergency braking

Do you know yourself? Do you know your motorcycle? I see and hear of way too many motorcycle accidents where motorcycles are running into the side of cars. Why is that? I know of three reasons for this.

  1. People not paying attention and not giving themselves enough room and time to react and stop.

  2. People not knowing the capabilities of their motorcycle.

  3. Lack of riding skills.

Now everyone has probably heard someone tell their story or someone else's story about how a car pulled out in front of them and there was nothing they could do. If you believe there was nothing you could do then you're right, there probably was nothing you could do. You already have the mindset of a statistic. Most people have no idea how quickly their motorcycle can brake until they run into something. That's the wrong time to find out your motorcycle can't stop that quick. If you knew how well your motorcycle brakes and handles then you might know how to adjust your speed when riding so you don't get into theses situations.

This is an exercise you can do in a safe and controlled environment. Bring your motorcycle up to normal traffic speed and then come to a stop as quickly as you can. Don't over brake or wash out the front wheel with too much front brake. This will tell you how much distance you need to bring your motorcycle to a complete stop. Knowing when to brake and when to maneuver to avoid an accident can be the difference between a trip to the hospital or going home safely. This will also test your skills on how well you handle your motorcycle in extreme braking. If you can't stop quickly and safely then you need to slow down when you ride and give yourself extra distance for stopping and maneuvering. A motorcycle has to be upright and going straight in order to do extreme braking. That's why you use extra caution when going around curves.

Now nobody is saying every accident is avoidable but most are. We want you to get home safe so take the time to learn your motorcycle and it's capabilities. Also don't over estimate your skills. When put under stress you will react differently so remember that. Have fun and be safe until the next time.
