Time to gear up.
We left off in our last confession with upgrading our riding gear. After looking at several pieces of protective gear I finally decided on a helmet, jacket and gloves to start with. Now my selection was based on where and how I ride. Now your selection may be different based on your riding needs and location so take that into consideration. Being from the old school of thinking, I'll admit that functionality was not what we normally looked for. Normally we would get a comfortable helmet with a stylish leather jacket and gloves and we considered that proper gear.
After speaking to some younger riders and becoming familiar with what is out there for riding gear these days, I have to admit, change does have it's benefits. Who would of thought that you could stay cool, be protected and look good all at the same time. The jacket was comfortable, very visible and had a removable liner for those hotter days. The modular helmet satisfied my need for a full face helmet with the ability to open up the face for easy access to speak or just get extra air and the built in tinted visor worked perfect on those sunny days. The gloves were flexible, comfortable and had protection for your knuckles in the event you go down.
I didn't want to go too crazy so I stopped with these three pieces of gear for now. My concerns were protection, comfort and visibility. I ride in a mixed temperature environment so this gear would work great pretty much all year long for me. Now the combination may not win any fashion shows but it will definitely do what it was intended to do. The good thing about all this is it didn't break the wallet. We still managed to stay under $300 for all three items. Now our next trip will be for pants, boots and undergarments. You have to admit, the more comfortable you are the longer you will ride. I almost forgot, I found a helmet liner to be just what I needed to protect my hair while wearing my helmet. Until the next time, have fun and be safe.
